General OB/GYN

The Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology, directed by Nahida Chakhtoura, M.D., offers gynecological services ranging from annual exams to advanced minimally invasive procedures. General obstetrical care including preconceptional counseling, prenatal care, and delivery is also offered.

Gynecology Services

Well-Woman Exams

HPV Vaccine (to guard against the Human Papillomavirus)

Evaluation of abnormal pap smears via:

  • Colposcopy (examination of the cervix and vagina using a magnifying instrument)
  • LightTouch (a non-invasive test using light to scan the cervix for cervical cancer)

Management of pre-invasive cervical cancer using:

  • LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure is designed to diagnose and/or treat the uterine cervix)
  • Cryotherapy (used to kill and freeze abnormal cells, particularly pre-cancerous cells)
  • Cone Biopsy (cone-shaped tissue sample is removed from the cervix for evaluation)

Evaluation of abnormal bleeding:

  • Gynecologic ultrasound
  • Sonohysterogram (an ultrasound procedure used to check for anomales inside the uterus)
  • Hysterescopic management of polpys and fibroids (using a small fiber optic telescope)
  • Endometrial ablation (the removal of the lining of the uterus using hysteroscopy)
  • Thermal ablation (minimally-invasive treatment for reducing excessive menstrual bleeding)

Evaluation and Management of Uterine Fibroids:

  • Medical management
  • Surgical management including the following approaches:
    -  Hysteroscopic resection (this procedure involves using a small fiber optic telescope)
    -  Laparoscopic (exam or surgery using a thin telescope-like tool called a laparoscope)
    -  Abdominal

Evaluation and Treatment of Benign Masses (which can form in the fallopian tubes or ovaries):

  • Medical management
  • Surgical management including the following approaches:
    -  Laparoscopic
    -  Abdominal

Evaluation and Treatment of Endometriosis (the presence of endometrial tissue outside of the lining of the uterus):

  • Medical and Surgical

Management of Prolapse (pelvic relaxation)
